Really happy that I got the chance to be involved with this project. I have nothing but love and respect for what Shane has done in regards to Daily Monsters. I highly recommend checking out Daily Monsters, Vol. 1 if you have the chance. Both Shane Hillman and Shane Long did an absolutely amazing job putting the book together.

I love this video, so fluid and the colors are to die for. In a lot of ways it reminds me of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I especially love the segues between environments, stalagmite ridden caves to beautiful cellular structures to glitter spewing power plants to luscious cake frosting to floating pink diamonds et cetera. So smooth and fresh. Love it!

I am a fan of the original Tron and can appreciate how groundbreaking it was for its time and how amazingly well the designs hold up today. When you have people like Moebius and Syd Mead working on said designs though, this is to be expected.

Seeing this trailer blew my mind, as an artist I feed on visuals of this caliber. The redesigned light cycles by Daniel Simon, use of color, use of the grid et cetera, everything looks stunning. To have these visuals backed by a Daft Punk soundtrack is perfect. To have Olivia Wilde starring and providing even more stunning visuals is the icing on the cake.

Loving the look of this, has a Tekkon Kinkreet via Studio Ghibli vibe going on, in other words the usual standard of animation you would expect from the French. From what I have heard it will be a 26 episode series. Each episode a half hour in length. The premise for the series is that one morning Nayah is playing hide and seek with her big brother Baidir, when suddenly the room is destroyed and Nayah has disappeared. Baidir then sets off on a wild quest in a fantasy world as you can see at the end of the trailer.

King Of Hearts

The Suit Up exhibition opening was Friday night so I can finally show off the piece I created for said exhibition. For those tuning in, Suit Up is a collaborative project put together by Kate McInnes and Sean Kelly and comprises several artworks from various Australian street, comic, and illustration artists, applying their unique style to playing cards.

The image below went through many revisions before I finished it early November last year, scrapped and began anew three times in total. It was actually a full year in the works, normally I work quicker, but I had a lot going on and probably a few more projects going then I could actually handle. This was also a big exhibition for me, so I wanted to really impress everyone attending.

My biggest source of inspiration was the balls to the wall rock video below.

The video is for Probot's "Shake Your Blood," it features 66 SuicideGirls, Dave Grohl on drums, and Lemmy of Motörhead fame on lead vocals and bass.

Batman 2.0

This was done for the recent "Batman 2.0: The Dynamic Do-Over" contest over at Project: Rooftop, which was inspired by the recent death of Bruce Wayne in Final Crisis. The idea for the contest was to redesign the Batman costume should Dick Grayson take over the mantle of the Dark Knight.

My main source of inspiration was the Batman Beyond costume, which is one of my favorite costume designs alongside the Silver Surfer. I absolutely love the simplicity of the design and tried to create something similar while maintaining elements of the current Batman costume and evoking the spirit of Dick Grayson's Nightwing costume.

Chase McCrae

At 3:34pm, December 19th, I officially became a proud father of two.

Mother and baby, Chase, are both doing extremely well and likely to be home as early as the coming Sunday.

Weighing in at 3.6 kilograms and 52 centimeters in length, Chase is perfectly healthy and shaping up to be just as amazing and handsome as his big brother Phoenix.

We are all so happy right now. Easily the best Christmas present we could ever ask for.

Dan felt it was time that he and I collaborated as opposed to constantly talking about collaborating. Never one to turn down a collaboration with an awesome artist, I jumped straight into it.

Been wanting to do something like this palette wise since finishing up a two color based exhibition piece a month or so back. Ended up mixing in some of the stuff I've been doing color wise with Ankle's character pics as well.

I'm quite happy with the result.

The Question

Another Ditko created character.

Became a big fan of the Question with his appearances in Justice League Unlimited and 52. A seemingly-paranoid, unfriendly, no-nonsense investigator who has little time for anything other than the pursuit of truth. A Zen-like Batman with a Spirit inspired costume. An amazing character who would go on to inspire Alan Moore's Rorschach of Watchmen fame.

My fav Question story is "Wild Geese", which takes place in Justice League Unlimited #36.

The story has the Justice League not only disbelieve, but openly mock, his paranoid theories and purposely lead him off the trail to keep him out of their way. Every urban legend, every ridiculous story from around the world play a part in the Question's investigation, leading to a shocking final revelation. It's a lot of fun to read even if you see the end coming.

Captain Atom

With what has seemed like a relentless year of project after project, I've decided to take a break to spend more time with my family and just chill out. My son turns five tomorrow, my beautiful girlfriend also finishes up her final med exam for the year tomorrow and our second child is due in less then three weeks. Its all happening. If I did not take a break I was bound to snap.

Aside from spending time with my wonderful little family, this break has also lead to me reading ridiculous numbers of comics on Mondays while having the house to myself. Monday past I decided to dig out some old comic boxes in the garage and came across some Strange Tales issues, by Ditko and Steranko, that I picked up at a garage sale back in high school. Finding these resulted in me having a more than slight Ditko high for the remainder of the day. If you can, I recommend getting your hands on Ditko's Dr. Strange work.

The Ditko high lead to me raiding Kris' blog for pics of Ditko created characters which I saw on there earlier in the year. Though created by Steve Ditko, the design below is actually by Pat Broderick and is one of my fav character designs ever. I needed a fix and need to keep the coloring skills up to snuff, so I colored it up quickly tonight. Messing with a new palette of color once again as well.

Savage Dragon #137

I previously mentioned my first Savage Dragon issue being Savage Dragon #34, part one of a two part Savage Dragon and Hellboy team up. One of the coolest things about it was the villian, Brainiape, a monkey with the brain if Hitler. I thought it was pretty cool that he should appear in issue 137. The appearance of another childhood favorite, Madman, and the Amazing Joy Buzzards made it win win all round.

My good friend Jason showed this video to me this afternoon and I absolutely love it.

Its a music video for a song titled 'Alice' by an electronic outfit named Pogo, the piece of music itself is composed using sounds recorded from the Disney film 'Alice In Wonderland'. The sounds recorded from 'Alice In Wonderland' in fact make up 90% of the recording.

BlazBlue : Calamity Trigger

It is being hailed as the "spiritual successor" to Guilty Gear, which makes perfect sense as it is made by the Guilty Gear team, and I am a fiend for Guilty Gear.

I've been keeping an eye on this game since late February. I have tried not to get to excited as there is still quite a wait ahead of me before I can play it. This video however makes it impossible not to get excited for this game.

The character designs may look a little flat compared to Guilty Gear, but I feel the gameplay more than makes up for that. There are still some rad character designs to be seen though, Taokaka and Arakune look like all kinds of cool.

The wait for this game just became a hell of a lot harder.

Savage Dragon #137

The pages below are for Savage Dragon #137, which I had the great pleasure of coloring. The line art is by Erik Larsen.

I've admired Erik's work since I was a kid. I think the first thing of his that I picked up was "The Return of the Sinister Six" storyline from Amazing Spider-Man #334-339 (?), which I managed to score at a second hand book shop a short drive from where I lived. He was a definite favorite of mine growing up. Jason Pearson, Art Adams and Erik Larsen were my top three as a kid. Mignola would later join this illustrious crew after reading my first Savage Dragon issue, Savage Dragon #34, part one of a two part Savage Dragon and Hellboy team up. Unfortunately to this day I've never read the second part of that story. Comics were hard to come by for me as a kid. Thankfully I work at a comic shop now.

Aside from Savage Dragon, which I continued to pick up scattered issues of until issue #100, I was a big fan of his work with Kurt Busiek on The Defenders. His work on Defenders really struck a chord with me, I love all 12 of those issues. They are well done, quirky and just all round fun to read.

Getting to color these pages below was a dream, for myself its the closest I will ever come to working with Jack Kirby. That is how highly I rate Erik.

I've only done a handful of work in comics, but to know people out there, like Erik, are actually taking notice of what little I have done, is very inspiring. Keeps me going.

Who's Gonna Save My Soul?

Came across this via a Gnarls Barkley MySpace bulletin.

Its a music video for the new Gnarls Barkley single 'Who's Gonna Save My Soul?'. Its amazingly well done in my eyes, a nice mix between a short film and music video, more short film than anything though. I could see some people thinking its a little bit of a downer, but I thought it was a fun little portrayal of the breaking up part of a relationship.

The video below is a must see for Jamie Hewlett fans! It is an Olympic Games promotional video based upon the traditional Chinese folklore 'Journey to the West'. The animation and music were specially produced by Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn of Gorillaz fame. Words can't describe how stunning it is.

Albarn and Hewlett, together with Chinese actor and director Chen Shi-zheng, have also put together a stage adaptation' of Journey to the West'.

Here is a page from a five page story that will, like Scummy, see print in Popgun Volume Two. Which, for those who missed it, features a very sexy cover by Paul Pope of THB fame.

The line art for the page below is by Brandon Graham. I've admired Brandon's work for years now, I think the first thing of his that really grabbed me was a Wizards pic, as in Ralph Bakshi's Wizards or as some people refer to it, "War Wizards". Until that point in time I did not think anyone else had actually heard of Wizards. So seeing a very nicely illustrated picture of Avatar and Elinore (think thats her name), of Wizards fame, had a very big impact on me, and sucked me right into checking out the rest of Brandon's work.

It was very cool to be given the opportunity to color Sputz and a pleasure to get to read it before everyone else.

The line art for the sequential work below is by Marley Zarkone. It was an absolute pleasure to color and also very refreshing as I was doing something different with my usual coloring. A nice little exercise in restraint, as I had to pull back, tone down and change up my usual color choices as well as my coloring.

Hulk

Finally got around to seeing The Incredible Hulk last night. I promised Phoenix I would take him last week, but could not find a cinema in the local area that was showing it. But last night was the night. Leila, Phoenix and myself finally got to see it and we loved every second of it. There was a part in the final fight scene where I nearly wet myself to be honest. I seriously loved it that much.

So while chilling out after dinner tonight, I did this quick sketch of the Green Goliath. The sketch also acted as a little warm up for this weeks Avengers Jam on the SatelliteSoda forums. I hope I do not completely botch his left leg to the point where I am too embarrassed to show it in my Avengers pic.

Early this week saw the passing of an amazing spirit through unfortunate circumstance.

Jeremy Earnshaw was one of the coolest and most charismatic people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Jeremy worked with Youth With A Mission here in Newcastle, mainly at their café and with their skate teams and was an amazing young gentlemen who I was fortunate enough to get to know and become friends with through the comic shop I work at and through comics in general. I say friends as he was so much more than just an average regular customer and that fact hit me pretty hard today when I opened the shop to an extremely overwhelming wall of silence. I absolutely loved seeing Jeremy and his lovely girlfriend Christina every Friday afternoon and/or Saturday morning when I opened the shop, and just talking comics or whatever else popped up.

Jeremy hasn't left my thoughts all this week and I have been turning over and over in my mind what I could do for him, to repay him for all the awesome memories he has left with both myself and my good friend and fellow comic shop guy James. Early this morning, standing out the back of the empty shop drying my eyes, the pieces all fell into place for me.

He was a big Avengers fan, loved them, was loving all the twists and turns of Secret Invasion and I'm told he "nearly peed his pants" when they hinted towards an Avengers movie in Hulk and of course Iron Man before it.

Therefore as but a small repayment for all the good memories he has left with both myself and James, this weeks jam on the SatelliteSoda forums is all about the Avengers and completely dedicated to Jeremy.

So head on over, check it out and spread the word to make this the most awesome jam EVER for Jeremy.

Darkseid (Mega Man Zero Remix)

My fascination of Jack Kirby's New Gods work continues and collided with another current obsession in what will hopefully be the first of many SatelliteSoda weekly art jams.

My other current obsession is the Mega Man Zero series, due to the release of the Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works a week or so back. I love how fun, colorful and straight up awesome the designs for the characters are. Very similar to Kirby's New Gods designs in a lot of ways actually.

So to kick the jams off the task for the week was reinventing the New Gods characters as Mega Man characters.

New Gods

I have spent the past few months rediscovering my love for the works of Jack Kirby. In some cases discovering love for works I never knew, the New Gods stuff in particular. I wasn't really familiar with Kirby's New Gods work, I knew of it but had never really read it or gave it a decent look in. Thanks to DC reprinting that whole period of Kirby's work however, I've been able to read it and I've been loving it.

Being a visual artist I can't help but marvel at the amazing character designs and how much energy Kirby laid down on each and every page. Its absolutely astonishing. I can't get enough of it at the moment.

I had an unfortunately slow day at the comic shop yesterday, so I made the most of it and did a bit of sketching between serving and chatting with customers. The recent development of said New Gods addiction lead to me sketching out head shots of my favorite New Gods.

Ten Weeks, One Day

Already a proud father, I now have a reason to be prouder. My beautiful girlfriend Leila and I are expecting our second child.

Its all very exciting, I think more so for our son Phoenix who has wanted to be a big brother for the longest time!

Only ten weeks and one day in and we already have our first pic of the little one, who measures three centimeters in length with a little heart beating at 167 beats per minute.

So very happy right now!

Gladstone's School For World Conquerors

Mark Smith recently posted a teaser, for Gladstones School For World Conquerors, on a guest Blog@Newsarama. It is an awesome project which I am very proud to be involved with. At this point in time however, a release date has yet to be set.

Mark will of course be on writing duties, Armand Villavert will be providing the art, Steven Finch of Fonographiks fame will be dropping letters and I will be laying down the color. Dan Hipp of Amazing Joy Buzzards fame came up with the awesome Gladstone's logo gracing the top of the teaser.

Below is another Gladstone's related image of some of the main students who will appear in the book. Aside from this being a character study for Armand, it was also a test lettering run for Finch and a test color run for myself. I think it, along with the teaser, gives a good idea on what you can expect with the final product.

Blue Beetle

Late last week, I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Blue Beetle #1, from one customer that frequents the comic shop I work at. When I say Blue Beetle I mean Ted Kord, the Blue Beetle created by Steve Dikto.

Soon as I saw the cover, with Ted swinging down from his bug with his trusty sky wire, I knew I was in for a treat.

Its an amazing blend of classic Spider-man quips and humor mixed with the gadgetry and detective elements of Batman. An instant classic, I loved it. Hit all the right notes and left me keen to read more.

Mid way through the book it features a sequence with Dan Garrett, the previous Blue Beetle.

This piqued my interest and led to me getting on Ebay and purchasing Secret Origins #2, which explains the origins of both Dan and Ted. It's drawn by Gil Kane too, which instantly made it a must have!

So my eyes have been opened to the wonderful world of the Ted Kord era of Blue Beetle, and I've been provided with the inspiration to bust out the following sketch of the one and only Ted Kord.

Pinapl

As Popgun is released later this week, I am finally able to show a page from the Pinapl story Rey and I worked on for the book.

Pinapl marks my first time colouring sequentials, so while there is some room for improvement, I am pretty happy with how they turned out. Stoked I got to work with someone like Rey straight off the bat as well.

I will be working with Rey again very shortly on a Longshot story for Marvel's fabled "indie" anthology. It's going to be rad!
